Easy Guitar Tabs vs. Easy Sheet Music
Author: Taylor Benjamin
Guitar tabs and sheet music, or notation, are two common types of written music used for multiple instruments. Beginner guitar players often have to choose between easy guitar tabs and easy sheet music to read to learn to put sounds together to make tunes, but deciding is difficult if you do not have the knowledge you need to make an informed decision. It's important to know the basics of each as well as the positives and negatives of using each before you decide. Easy guitar tabs are all about notes and chords, strings and frets. To read an easy guitar tab, which usually works only for stringed instruments, a simple diagram is used. Six horizontal lines have a number on one of them. The line it is on is which string of the guitar to hold down, while the number on the line represents in which fret the string needs to be held down in. Easy guitar tabs and easy sheet music differ greatly from one another in their setup. Sheet music also starts out with horizontal lines, but five of them, and the spaces between those lines are used as well. Different types of notes like half and whole notes are placed throughout the lines, and the position of the notes in those lines tells the player which note it is. For example, a note in the third space down is a C, and so on. Easy guitar tabs are very easy for beginners to learn to read, and offer not only the note to play but how to play it, helping the player associate the note with the tab for future reference. Sheet music is used for virtually every instrument that has different notes, so it can be helpful to know how to read it if you plan to play other instruments down the line, as not all of them will use easy guitar tabs for them. Both of course use notes to help players put sounds together. Sheet music compared to easy guitar tabs is like night and day compared to how easy it is to read. Sheet music is much more difficult, and this is one of the first reasons people give up on the guitar when they become confused about sheet music. Easy guitar tabs are simpler to learn to read and very bountiful, but once the beginner player becomes an expert player, he/she may find trouble finding guitar tabs for harder songs. It is generally recommended to use easy guitar tabs as one is learning and learning to read sheet music as a side effort for future use.
